Kits News - 1st March 2024

The Kits had a lovely week this week. Our topic book was A Bit Lost by Chris Haughton and we spent the week talking about our home lives and Mummies in preparation for ‘Bring Mummy to School Day’ next week.

Our Role-Play Area was set up as a 'Baby Day Care' and the children were busy looking after the babies, feeding them bottles of milk and wrapping them in blankets to keep them warm. The activity promoted the children’s friendships as they shared the resources and played with each other and also developed their own self-care as they practised doing up fastenings by themselves.

We talked about babies with the children and many of the Kits enjoyed talking about their baby brothers and sisters at home. During Free Play we also engaged in imaginative small world play with each other as we played with the doll's house and talked about our home lives and routines.

During the week we looked closely at our topic book and retold the story with toys from our ‘Story Basket’. The ‘Story Basket’ toys help the children to comprehend and retell the story in their own way and introduce another way to tell stories. As we did this we discussed the different animals and events in the story and also talked about what our own Mummies look like. We drew pictures of the owls and squirrel and the children were very accurate with their drawings, including wings and eyes in their pictures.

The children like spending time playing with the tools and this week we used them in our Science Focus Time. The children explored how ice melts as they freed the creatures frozen inside it. Firstly, they sprinkled salt on top and we discussed how the salt melts the ice and why it does this and then the children used hammers to chip away at in and free the animals inside. They were very patient throughout this activity and were very excited when their animals eventually became free!
