Kits News - 23rd September 2022

The Kits have had a great week this week and our topic has been the nursery rhyme Miss Polly has a Dolly. A lot of the children have shown an interest in playing with the dolls over the past few weeks and it has been a great topic to discuss new siblings as well as how to keep healthy. It has supported the children’s communication and language skills as they learnt the rhyme and engaged in discussions with their teachers about times they have felt poorly and how we can make Miss Polly’s Dolly better.

Our role play area has been set up as ‘St Georges Hospital’s Doll’s Ward’ and the children have been busy caring for the sick dolls throughout the week. They have developed their own independence and personal, social and emotional skills as they have changed the dolls’ nappies, given them bottles and listened to their breathing and heart beats with the stethoscopes. The children also practised sharing and taking turns with the resources and it’s lovely to see them start to play together sociably.

In our Science lesson on Thursday we talked about washing hands and the importance of using soap. The younger Kits used cloths to rub the painted ‘germs’ off the rubber gloves and the older Kits conducted an experiment with pepper and soap.

We had a deep tray full of water with pepper flakes on top and we explained to the children that they were going to dip the cotton wool bud with washing up liquid on into the pepper to see what happens. They were very patient and careful as they conducted the experiment and carefully placed the cotton wool into the water, looking in awe and wonder as the pepper quickly moved away. The children had lots of questions and we used this experiment to illustrate how soap works and why it is important. Afterwards we all washed our hands recapped on how to do this independently.

In Art we embraced the children’s love of exploring different DT materials by making 3D beds and doctors’ bags from cardboard and boxes. We discussed the differences between the materials, comparing their colours and textures and the children described them as ‘soft’ and ‘shiny’. They loved getting their hands messy with the paint and were very proud of their creations!
