Squirrels News – 22nd April 2022
It has been lovely to welcome the children back after the Easter break. We had a great time discussing our holiday news and finding out about all the exciting adventures everyone had taken part in over the break. We heard about beetles on the beach, swimming in the sea, getting on an airplane and heading to the park!
Our topic book this week has been Your Body Is Awesome by Sigrun Danielsdottir. This is a wonderful book which looks at all of the amazing things our bodies can do and led too a great discussion about all the things we can do and the things we hope to do when we are bigger and older such as riding bikes and running ‘super fast’ in running races!
To accompany our discussion and learning about the body we painted self-portraits in Art, thinking hard about the correct proportions of the body and all of the body parts we needed to include. In Science we expanded our vocabulary by labelling various body parts and discussed the words for parts of the body which can be a little trickier to remember such as elbows.
On our Outdoor Learning Day we thought about what happens to our bodies when we exercise. To put our hypotheses to the test we set the Squirrels a challenge of completing an obstacle course so that we could observe the effects that physical activity had on our bodies. We noticed that after physical activity we get very hot and our breathing gets louder. We also noticed that we get red and sweaty. We discussed why this is and observed the changes in our bodies as our hearts and breathing returned to normal paces.
We continued to put our physical skills to the test in Sports where we practised our shooting skills. It is wonderful to see how the children's ball skills are developing, you can see they are gaining a lot more control over the ball.
In Spanish we learnt how to say various animal names through playing games and listening to music. We also recapped how to say "I Like.." followed by the various fruits we like to eat. It has been a lovely first week back and we cannot wait to jump straight into the rest of the Summer Term’s activities. It's going to be a busy one!
