Squirrels News - 24th May 2024
The Squirrels had a great week this week and in line with our fundraising activities for the Mission Air Ambulance our non-fiction topic book was Ambulance and Air Ambulance Crew by Nancy Dickmann. We explained to the children the difference between a fiction and a non-fiction book and they enjoyed looking at the real-life photos inside it and learning new vocabulary around the topic.
We spent the week learning about the Emergency services and our Role-Play Area was set up as a Doctor's Surgery, where the children were busy tending to the babies, making them better with bandages, medicine and lots of cuddles! We engaged in small-world play with the helicopters and they have been a great resource to help us practice sharing and taking turns. It has also developed the children’s imagination as they pretended the helicopters were kind as they rescued people and also hitched a ride on a spaceship at one point! They were very delicate toys and it was lovely to see the Squirrels play with them gently, respecting the resources.
The children have been amazing at grasping the concept of our ‘Half Marathon’ to raise money for the charity “Mission Air Ambulance’ and it has led us into discussions about how far a half marathon is and how we can measure in different units such as kilometres and miles.
During Art this week we painted and decorated helicopter propellers which the children then wore proudly on their backs during our Outdoor Learning Day. During out Outdoor Learning Day we re-enacted the role of an Air Ambulance crew as we wore our helicopter wings and pretended to rescue a baby and fly them to the hospital, marked out with a cross. The children were amazing at waiting and taking turns to rescue the babies and we talked about our own hospital and doctors’ visits in the past. The children have been amazing at walking so far towards our half marathon goal and we would like to thank everyone for the donations they have given.
