This week, learned about Mary’s Meals, a wonderful charity that provides nutritious school meals to children living in some of the world’s poorest communities. Their vision is for every child to have a daily meal in their place of education, helping children who may otherwise experience hunger to have the energy to attend school, concentrate and learn. Mary’s Meals currently reaches more than 3 million children every school day.

To help the children understand this idea, we spoke about food, sharing and kindness, and thinking about how fortunate we are to have food to enjoy.

We also made porridge, a delicious energy-fuelling meal. The children added a selection of different fruits to their porridge, which gave them opportunities to explore new tastes, smells and textures. They also practised their fine motor skills as they carefully cut and prepared the fruit.

To complement our learning, we chose Goldilocks by Nick Sharratt as our Book of the Week. We know that Goldilocks gets herself into a little trouble when she discovers the bears’ porridge!

We used this familiar story to explore size, comparison and ordering, thinking about which things are big, medium and small and putting objects into the correct order. We also used the story to talk about good manners, making choices and respecting other people’s belongings.

We encouraged the children to retell parts of the story, join in with familiar phrases and share their ideas about what Goldilocks could have done differently.

This week our Role Play area was transformed into a Doctors and Vets Surgery, following a vote by the children about what they would like to explore! We had lots of opportunities for the children to take on different roles, including doctors, nurses, vets, patients and receptionists. Our bears, and even Goldilocks, needed a little help too!

Through our role play, we encouraged the children to develop their communication and language skills, practise listening and speaking with others, and explore how we can care for and look after people and animals.

In Art, we continued to develop our scissor skills by cutting out different types of food from magazines. We spoke about the foods we recognise and began exploring different food groups, discussing which foods help to keep our bodies healthy and strong.

The children had opportunities to practise holding and controlling scissors safely, developing their hand strength, coordination and precision while creating their own food pictures and collages.
