Kits News - 15th March 2024

The Kits had a great week this week and our topic book was one of the children’s favourite stories, Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons. The story teaches counting and introduces simple subtraction as Pete the Cat’s buttons slowly disappear. It also teaches resilience as Pete does not get upset when he loses them. It has a great rhyme which the children love and we have been singing “My buttons, my buttons, my four groovy buttons” around the classroom all week!

In Art the children made their own ‘Pete the Cat’ puppets using wooden spoons. They painted the spoons and then added buttons, googly eyes and ears to give them features and we practised counting how many buttons they had. During our Maths Focus Time, we practised our counting again, using real buttons this time and the children stuck some on their activity sheets too.

In our Communication and Language Focus Time we concentrated on emotions as we talked about how we feel when things go wrong. It can be hard to control your emotions when you are 2 or 3-years-old and talking to the children about their feelings helps them to understand them and therefore start to regulate them better.

During our Science Focus Time, we made salt dough buttons. The children love baking and they started the activity by measuring and mixing the different ingredients together. They then manipulated the dough with their hands and used their fingers to poke button holes before putting them in the oven and then painting them the next day.

We have also been very busy keeping active this week by jumping and running in the Outdoor Learning Environment and had great fun jumping on our special ‘Pete the Cat Hopscotch’, where the children took it in turns to jump on his numbered buttons!
