Fledglings News - 2nd October 2026
What a wonderfully busy week we’ve had! This week, our learning was centred around the Harvest, giving the children lots of opportunities to explore, talk, play and learn through real-life experiences.
Our Book of the Week was a non-fiction book all about the Harvest. As we enjoyed the book together, we encouraged the children to notice the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. We also looked at real-life photographs of harvesting activities and talked about what we could see, helping the children to develop their understanding of the world around them.
Through our discussions, the children had opportunities to learn and use new vocabulary linked to farms, crops, growing and Harvest, supporting their Communication and Language development.
This week was particularly exciting as the Fledglings also had their first visit to the Secret Garden! We joined the Fledglings from 345 Wandsworth for a morning of play, exploration and shared experiences.
This provided wonderful opportunities for the children to develop their Communication and Language skills as they interacted with new friends and adults. It also supported their Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) as they built confidence in a new environment, developed relationships and learned to play alongside others.
There was also lots of opportunities for Physical Development (PD) as the children explored and moved around the garden.
Our Role-Play area was transformed into a Farm Shop this week and the children enjoyed becoming farmers, shopkeepers and customers as they explored buying and selling fruit and vegetables.
This encouraged imaginative play, turn-taking, conversation and problem-solving, whilst introducing mathematical language such as more, less, big, small, heavy and light. We also explored the different colours, shapes and sizes of the crops we might find at Harvest, as well as exploring how we pay for things.
We continued learning about our Person of Interest, JB Gill this week. JB is a farmer, musician and television presenter who is known to children for his work on CBeebies, including programmes where he shares his knowledge and experiences of farming and the natural world.
The children continued to discover what it means to be a farmer and how farmers help to grow and produce the food that we enjoy. This linked beautifully with our Harvest theme and gave us another opportunity to talk about where our food comes from.
On Wednesday, we took part in our Harvest Gathering, hosted by Pastor Pete. The children learned about the importance of the Harvest and celebrated the wonderful variety of crops that are grown.
We explored how crops can be different shapes, sizes and colours, encouraging the children to look closely and describe what they see, including how each item is unique.
Friday was another very special morning as we welcomed our grandparents to school! The children had the opportunity to show their grandparents around the classroom, join in with some play, take part in a special activity and enjoy some singing together.
This was a lovely opportunity for the children to share their learning and experiences with their special visitors while developing their confidence, communication and social skills.
