This week, our Topic Book was Mixed by Arree Chung. The story allowed us to build on our learning about colours while deepening the children’s awareness of British Values—particularly the importance of acceptance and understanding that although we may all look different, we are the same.

The story also reflects some of our core classroom principles, such as using kind hearts, listening to one another, and treating everyone with respect.

Some of the activities that stood out for the children during the week included making a colourful fruit salad. During this activity, we discussed the colours and tastes of the fruit, whilst focusing on refining our fine motor skills by using one-handed tools such as knives. We also discovered that we all have different likes and dislikes. For example, just because one person’s favourite fruit is a blueberry doesn’t mean everyone loves them!

We explored colour mixing and observed what happens when we combine primary colours. The children especially enjoyed using coloured shaving foam in the Outdoor Learning Environment — spooning, stirring, and experimenting with textures. We also used pipettes to carefully mix coloured water, helping to develop hand-eye coordination and precision.

Another highlight was sharing photos of our families with teachers and friends. We named family members and discussed how many siblings, grandparents, and cousins we have. We also drew pictures of our families. These activities helped to expand the children’s vocabulary around family, boost their confidence in speaking in front of others, and develop their communication skills, particularly listening to others and waiting for their turn to speak.
