Squirrels News - 6th June 2025
It has been lovely to welcome the children back to the nursery this week. Everyone was in high spirits and thoroughly enjoyed sharing their Holiday News. It sounds like everyone had a great time, getting up to all sorts of exciting activities over the May Half Term.
The children enjoyed looking through each other’s photos and hearing what everyone had got up to, before asking questions to extend the discussion further. During Focus Time the children wrote and illustrated their news. It is such a pleasure to see how far all of the children have come from where they started to where they are now with their pen control.
Our story this week was The Lion Inside, which is a story all about being brave and recognising that, no matter who we are, we can all do amazing things. The children are really enjoying the book and especially love how it shows that everyone has something to offer.
In Art, we’ve been busy creating our own lions! The children have been painting, using felt, cutting, and sticking with great enthusiasm. The lions manes manes have been created using strips of paper with various line formations on for the children to copy over, developing their pen grip and control further.
As the book touches on the idea of size, we’ve also been exploring measurement in Focus Time. The children used rulers to measure pencils. It was a bit tricky remembering to start at zero, but everyone gave it a great try. During another Focus Time, we reflected on times when we have been brave, just like the mouse in our book. The children shared thoughtful examples, such as being brave after a fall or going down a really big slide.
In Dance, the children went on a magical Secret Garden adventure with Miss Jade. At one point, the slowest snail won the race, an intriguing concept for some of our speed-loving snails!
We had a great Outdoor Learning Day this week where we decided to venture to a different part of Wandsworth Common and have our snack, observing the ducks and their ducklings. It was extremely peaceful. The children observed the ducks behaviour as they quacked at each other and chased each other around the pond.
We then enjoyed Free Flow Play on common and had the opportunity to feed the ducks. Having searched for insects prior to Half Term the children went on a ladybird hunt and were pleased to find quite a few, including an orange one. The children played all together and at one point they created a family Role Play, using a tree as their house. We then came together for our Focus Time where the children went and found a specific number of objects such as 8 leaves then wrote the number of natural objects they had found.
