Squirrels News - 19th September 2025

In Free -Play this week the Squirrels have been exploring messy activities, with the children using their hands to mark-make with paint. They also tried out the hand-eye coordination activity Tap Tap, securing shapes to a corkboard using pins and hammers. We have been sorting objects by their initial letter sound and exploring shapes.

In the Outdoor Learning Environment, the children have explored the sensory tent and tunnel and practised using pipettes to transfer water, which helps strengthen their pincer grip. We have also explored forces using guttering and cars and became builders using the diggers.

In Focus Time we discussed our Weekend News, explored shapes and name recognition as well as taking part in Write Dance. Write Dance is a movement programme designed to help children develop the muscles in their arms in preparation for writing.

We voted for our Role Play area for next week and began discussing our person of interest this term, Karl Benz, the creator of the car.

On the way to the common for our Outdoor Learning Day, we looked for 2D shapes in the environment. We quickly realised that we are surrounded by shapes everywhere! On our walk, we spotted spiders building their webs and even had a conversation about rubbish and recycling when we met the refuse collectors.

Once at the common, the children explored balancing, walking carefully along a tree trunk and climbing on low branches. They also worked together, using teamwork and lots of upper-body strength, to gather logs and sticks to build a big campfire. Before heading back to nursery, there was just enough time for a few fun rounds of hide and seek.
