Our Role Play area, the hairdressers has been extremely busy this week with customers asking for cuts, blow-dries, and even colour changes. Everyone left the salon looking fabulous!

A highlight of our week, was heading to the Post Office to buy stamps so that we could send nursery invitations to our Grandparents. We discussed why stamps and addresses are needed on envelopes, how the mail travels from A to B, the colours of Royal Mail, and even how letters are freed from the postbox — a very important question, I’m sure you’ll agree!

Following on from our outing to the Post Office and creating invitations for grandparents, the children continued to write cards at the mark-making table during Free Play, and post them into post boxes. This encouraged them to explore early writing, with some of the children producing more detailed drawings and even writing their own names.

During Free Play the children have also been observing what happens when vinegar and bicarbonate of soda are combined. They enjoyed watching it bubble and pop as they carefully transferred the vinegar onto the bicarbonate using pipettes. We also began exploring patterns, looking at size and colour sequences and sorting objects by their initial sounds, focusing on j, e, and s.

In Free Play, the children have explored brushing teeth, making sure the wild animals were taking good care of their teeth as we discussed oral health. At the same time, they developed their fine motor skills and shape knowledge by threading shape buttons.

This week we had our Music session in the Church to build confidence ahead of next week’s Harvest Festival. In Spanish, the children met Tula, who introduced different feelings, and we also focused on learning numbers. In Sports the children developed their coordination through a fun colour-sorting game. During Dance the children went to the sea becoming various sea creatures as they developed their movement skills.

On our way to the common this week, the Squirrels continued to find shapes in the environment and discuss our surroundings. We observed the autumnal leaves and building works taking place on our route. We looked for some more spiders in their webs and spoke about how to properly dispose of our rubbish as we greeted the refuse collectors.

For our Outdoor Learning Day Focus activity, we went on a number hunt with the children where we collected numbers written on leaves in numerical order. The children collected the leaves on kebab sticks having previously spoken about how to handle them safely. Once this activity was over the children wanted to continue collecting leaves to add to our autumnal scene at school.
