Squirrels News - 3rd October 2025
Our book of the week this week was, Colin and Lee, Carrot and Pea. These two are very different but they are the very best of friends with their own unique attributes. Lee, the pea, is able to bounce for instance and Colin the carrot makes a great bridge.
We took inspiration from the book in our activities and in Art we enjoyed creating shape pictures as we made friends for Lee the circle pea and Colin the rectangular carrot. One of the children added a circular tomato and said they were good at being wheels. A triangle was good as the roof of a house and a square the body of the house. We had a semi-circle hat and another circle, folded in half to make a good taco. What wonderful attributes these shapes all have.
This week we went to our very first Dew Drop Inn session of the school year. This is where the little kids (the Squirrels') meet the big kids (the pensioners). Dew Drop Inn is held every Tuesday and from time to time we join in with the fun too. Today the little kids and big kids were drawing each other’s portraits. Everyone got involved and were polite and kind to each other. At the end of the drawing session, we all sang a few rounds of ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’.
We also had a great time on our Outdoor Learning Day this week. We noticed lots of snails on our walk which led to a conversation about snails and frog’s legs being eaten in France! The children were fascinated to learn where a snail’s eyes are and enjoyed observing the colour of their shells and the way they move. We walked past a builder’s site which was a hive of activity. The children loved it! We saw diggers, cement being made and poured, drills drilling nails into wood and brick, scaffolding being erected, lasers being used, a fence being built and the best part was the pully system to get items from the ground up to the top of the scaffolding! For our Focus activity on the common we made 2D shapes out of natural objects.
The highlight of our week however amongst all of this has to be our Harvest Festival. The children were performed amazingly on stage, participating in the actions and offering food donations for the collection. It was a very special morning.
